Fertilize fescue lawns with a high-nitrogen, slow-release formula in early November. If your turf is dark green by Thanksgiving Day, it will maintain its color all winter long.
Watch for scale on evergreen trees and shrubs. Spray with Orthene or Safer’s insecticidal soap while the pests are still active.
Plant “B&B” (balled and burlapped), bare-root, and container-grown fruits such as peaches, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, and muscadines.
Begin preparations for the holiday season. Early in the month, plant a pot or two of paperwhite narcissus or a huge South African amaryllis to add to the holiday spirit. Start them in November for blooms in December.
Plant spring-flowering bulbs outdoors like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths later in November. Add bonemeal and 5-10-15 fertilizer to stimulate growth.
