IT’S JULY. IT’S TIME TO...
Watch for signs of stress caused by drought. Large trees may need watering if you see discoloration, drying, dieback, and premature leaf fall. Water as restrictions allow.
Look out for lace bugs on azalea and Pyracantha. Damaged leaves have a silver appearance. Check the undersides of the leaves, as this is where lace bugs feed. Spray with Orthene as a preventative.
Fertilize perennial flowering plants with 5-10-15 on a six- to eight-week schedule through the end of the season.
Cut back iris leaves into a fan shape approximately 8 inches in height after the tips begin to brown. Now is a good time to divide large, overgrown clumps and move to a new spot in the garden.
Keep grass cut to the proper height so your lawn will efficiently use available moisture: 2 inches for common Bermuda, 1 to 1.5 inches for hybrid Bermuda, 1 to 2 inches for zoysia, and 3 inches for fescue.
